high fructose corn syrup

All of my research on healthy eating after the revelations from this post has really changed my attitude towards food. It’s also made me a “label reader”. Literally every product I pick up, the first thing I do is read the label. And if there is anything in there that isn’t good for us, it goes right back on the shelf. High Fructose Corn Syrup is one of those things that I am completely eliminating from our diet.

So last week as I was checking all our labels and I came across a juice that I had bought on sale the week prior. It’s V8 Splash, a juice that I’ve seen a lot and I know is popular. When it comes to ingredient lists the first ingredient is the most predominant all the way down to the least predominant ingredient.

So I looked at the ingredients and it is as follows:
Water, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Juice from Concentrate

Now, I wasn’t shocked to see High Fructose Corn Syrup, after my research on it I have come to expect it on most labels I read. But I was absolutely shocked to see it as the number 2 ingredient in the juice, before even juice was listed! How can this drink even be labeled juice?!

So what did I do with the sugar-water that I discovered? Poured it down the sink. It did cross my mind to give it to someone else (because I hate to waste money) but I couldn’t bring myself to allow someone else to inadvertently feed their children something that barely resembles fruit. So parents, please be educated about the choices you make for your children. There is a difference between “Juice Beverage” and actual Juice.

Here is some more information on High Fructose Corn Syrup.
