the relaunch

In 2007 I received my first camera (Nikon D60) and I wasn’t really sure how to use it. A recent trip to the UK had ignited a passion inside of me. I had always been a natural creative but the exciting part about photography I fell in love with was that it combined my creativity with my love for technology. At that time photography wasn’t a ‘thing’ (like it is now)…I was simply following my passion and I started taking pictures for everyone I knew!

One of my first weddings was in 2009 for my husbands’ cousin. Right after the ceremony a huge storm rolled through which meant we weren’t able to take portraits outside…this was the first time I had been put in this kind of position. All of my pre-planned ideas were quickly falling to the wayside and because I worked well under pressure it resulted in one of my favorite shots I’ve taken of a bride and groom:

Shortly after that Ash Imagery chose me as his second shooter for an Indian wedding. It was an honor to be chosen and I learned so much working with someone who had so much experience. The exposure from working with Michael, being featured twice on Rock ‘n’ Roll bride; once as an Up and Coming photographer and again for a wedding brought me lots of work, quickly. In my second season as a wedding photographer I had 10 weddings booked. Meeting with couples and shooting their weddings was something that came naturally to me, something that gave me energy and didn’t feel like ‘work’ at all!

At that time my husband had his first start-up company and it required us to pack our bags and move to Little Rock, Arkansas. In the middle of that second season I also became pregnant with our second child. I spent the summer traveling back to Houston to shoot the weddings I had booked, it was exhausting but I was excited about how much I was learning and growing. My husband also joined me as my second shooter; it was so much fun to shoot weddings with him and englexas quickly became something that we enjoyed together!

Once wedding season was over in 2010 we had our little girl Darby and decided it would be best to put the camera down and take a break from weddings for a while to focus on our family. I mostly took pictures of friends and family in 2011 and developed my personal blog. I planned to start my business back up but it was slow going because when you move cities, you are basically starting over. I booked a few weddings but when Darby was 9 months old we found out we were pregnant again (surprise!) and we knew that juggling 3 kids (2 of them under 2) and a photography business would be very difficult, especially since Gabriel was working so hard on his company. So, we decided that I would just focus 100% of my attention on our family for a season with the intention of one day starting it back up.

In 2013 we moved to Crystal Lake, Illinois to plant a church with our best friends, Nick and Lyndie. We had our first Sunday service in September of that year and it’s doing awesome! For the past year we’ve dedicated all of our time to The Church, Gabriel has launched his 4th company as a State Farm agent and I’ve been taking every opportunity I can to get my camera out again shoot!

Now that we are finally settled in one place, our kids are all in school and we’re surrounded with an awesome group of supporters: we’re excited to announce that we are going to re-launch englexas photography!

There are lots of exciting (and free!) things ahead for this year. We have a passion for photography, a genuine love to make people smile and a deep desire to provide families with images that can be treasured for a lifetime. We are excited about this new adventure and what it means for our family… englexas photography is back in 2015!

big news

In case any of you missed our big news on Facebook and Instagram I thought I would share on here and give a little more of the back story…

Gabriel and I had always originally said that we would have either 2 or 4 children (both of us were 1 of 3) but when Deacon came along and rocked our world we seriously reconsidered that plan! We finally came down to the final decision on whether or not we should be “done” in the beginning of July and considered many different factors. For me personally I had always desired some specific things and never got them, they may sound silly to you but they were just genuine desires I always had. As we were going through the process of whether or not to be “done” originally I had grand ideas that this final pregnancy could be God’s way of giving me all that I had ever wanted. I quickly came to the realization that the likelihood of this happening was very slim, because how often do I get what I want?! Hardly ever! And if I was looking to this pregnancy in that way then how would I feel when nothing was the way that I wanted it to be? Looking back on it now I feel like it was such a silly train of thought but it really did play a role in my decision making. This, among other things helped us to decide to be officially done and we even felt like we had confirmation when some friends became pregnant and we felt like it was our time to serve them.

About 3 weeks later I started to get sick. I’ve been having some digestive issues off and on the past few years so I just thought that’s what I was dealing with. When the feeling didn’t pass after a week I decided to take a pregnancy test just to rule that out! I took one in the evening and it was negative but then when I took another the next morning it was positive! Confused about the results I decided to just wait until my yearly doctor appointment the next Thursday. Shortly after I arrived at this appointment they confirmed that I was, in fact pregnant and a short ultrasound later that day told me I was already 7 weeks along!

The crazy thing about this whole thing is that we didn’t do anything different the “method” that worked for us for the last 9 years all of a sudden didn’t! When we decided we were done, we were already pregnant and when we found out that our friends were pregnant, we were only 10 days behind them! As shocked as we are about this new development we are truly excited and know for sure that this baby is a gift from God when we least expected it!
